To squander a twenty point lead is pretty useless. The reason? They can’t be honest. They’d plunge the UK back in time to the eighties: millions on the dole, soaring crime rates, relationship breakdown, homophobia, misogyny, racism - and more.

Terry Pratchett - Top Yourself Now Mate!

Dickheads like Terry Pratchett and that other attention seeker Debbie Purdy - “the MS Woman” - need to learn to shut up. Now I know it’s a bummer knowing you’re going to die. We all know we’re all going to die though, and I for one am not whingeing on about dying when I want. If I were to do so though I would say I don’t want to die until 2929 or 9999 or whatever - none of us really wants to die because most of us are scared of the whole idea of it.

These two “celebrities” are desperate for their deaths “to mean something” well I’m sorry but they won’t -  apart from the fact that you’ll be dead. I’m sorry Terry but you really aren’t that important, yes you write books, yes you’re fairly famous, and yes you wear a daft hat, but a hundred years from now you’ll be Terry Who?

As for you Ms Purdy this whole idea that your partner should be allowed to kill you is bollocks. If you can’t trust him to do it discretely without shouting from the roof tops about how unfair it all is that you’re going to die get another partner.

Both of these people are saying that they don’t want to die now but will want to die later on. But later on they won’t know what planet they’re on so how can they say that the persona that they will be then will want to die? They can’t. What they are really arguing is that we should be able to bind ourselves to being killed at a later date in a given set of circumstances. This is fallacious. In the same way that Parliament cannot bind itself neither can todays psyche bind tomorrow’s. If they want to choose when to die they’ll need to do it themsleves while thay can - dodge round to Boots and buy 50 paracetamol, then nip into an off licence and buy a bottle of brandy then consume it all. This is of course the answer. But what they are really doing is cowardly because they are seeking to condemn the persona that they will be when that persona has no chance to defend him or herself.

Euthanasia is dangerous and will be misused, anyone with a fully funtioning brain knows that. Terry Pratchett should shut up and top himself while he can take responsibility for himself. Instead he is campaigning for the deaths of thousands of old and disabled people who will be judged to be “deserving” of an early death. There are six billion of us on the planet the loss of Pratchett, Purdy or me will mean nothing, nothing at all.
